The Importance of Movement and Exercise

At Melrose Residential Care, we see movement and exercise as a vital part of
our daily routines. We actively encourage all young people to take part in physical activities and a variety of extracurricular events, based on their individual interests. Movement each day increases our ability to retain information from learning, boosts information intake and increases speed and working memory skills. As well as support for healthy brain functions, young people are more likely to lead happier, healthier lifestyles with movement fully incorporated in their daily lives.
Movement and exercise also promotes positive mental health, general health
and well-being and encourages positive sleep hygiene. At Melrose, all staff are dedicated and trained in this area and will actively inspire children and young people to participate, role modelling behaviors to support and encourage the many benefits of this approach which are
scientifically proven.

Nutrition- 7 Key Nutrients to Support Healthy Brain Functions

For us, mealtimes are an important part of each day. It allows both young
people and staff to come together, discuss similar interests and practice social
communication skills. At Melrose Residential Care, we incorporate the 7 key nutrients into our menus to support healthy brain functions. These include Protein, Magnesium, Iron, Zinc, Fibre, Omega 3 and Water. With a fully trained team, we take into consideration Allergies and Intolerances, Sensory difficulties and Medications. We aim to ensure that all
young people have access to healthy food choices throughout the day that will
support and even enhance overall well-being and learning opportunities. Our menus provide a variety of healthy options, ensuring that all children have
access to a high quality of meal and snack choices.

Support for Positive Sleep Hygiene and Medication

At Melrose, we recognise that many children and young people who have
complex, neurodiverse needs, often struggle with poor sleep. This can often be
linked to the effects of prescribed medications or excess energy that hasn’t
been used throughout the day. In many cases, this will often have a knock on
effect making morning routines a struggle.
At Melrose Children’s Home and Supported Accommodation for 8-18 year olds, we offer a variety of strategies to support young people encouraging self-
regulation and promoting positive sleep hygiene. Our team are all trained in this area with awareness of the side effects of
prescribed medication, taken into consideration.
